7.30 pm 2018 Inaugural Lecture:
Prof. Alice Jenkins,
Head of School and Professor of Victorian Literature and Culture (English Literature), University of Glasgow
Alice Jenkins is Professor of Victorian Literature and Culture and works mainly on the emergence of the knowledge economy in the nineteenth century. Publications include Space and the ‘March of Mind’: Literature and the Physical Sciences, 1815-1850 (OUP, 2007) and an edition of Michael Faraday’s essays, Michael Faraday’s ‘Mental Exercises’: An Artisan Essay-Circle in Regency London (Liverpool UP, 2008). She has recently completed a book on Victorian ideas about the ultimate unity of knowledge, as well as a cultural history of Euclidean geometry in the nineteenth century, which was written as part of Professor Jenkins’s three-year research project, Nineteenth-Century Euclid, funded by the European Research Council.

Aaron Doyle, lead vocalist with Dúlamán – Voice of the Celts group.
Aaron Doyle is a 21 year old Tenor, who hails from Monasterevin Co. Kildare. Aaron began his musical studies as a junior chorister in St Peter’s Boys School choir under the directorship of Mr John Proctor and vocal coach Mrs Elizabeth Cleary. Aaron then furthered his musical studies with Mrs Berna Hayden in Herbert Lodge School of Music.
Aaron attended Clongowes Wood College as a recipient of The Alberto Hurtado Scholarship programme. During his time in Clongowes, Aaron was a distinguished principal vocalist of both the Clongowes Wood College senior choir and the Schola Cantorum. Aaron then studied Vocal Studies in The Royal Irish Academy of Music under the tutelage of Dr Veronica Dunne and repetiteur Dr Dearbhla Collins.
Aaron is currently a principal lead vocalist with the internationally acclaimed show Dúlamán – Voice of the Celts. After the group had been signed by Sony Records, their self-titled album held the number one spot in German World music charts. Having returned from an extremely successful tour of Germany, the show is now embarking on further tours for 2018 – 2019, which will include the United States of America.

Gail McConnell
Lecturer, School of Arts, English and Languages, Queen’s University, Belfast
Gail McConnell joined Queen’s in January 2013 and she publishes both poetry and criticism. Her research interests are in modern Irish and British poetry. Her monograph explores the relationship between theology and form in Northern Irish poetry, with attention to the poetry of Seamus Heaney, Michael Longley and Derek Mahon. Recently, she has published articles on Northern Irish poetry after the peace process in boundary 2.

John F. Deane, poet
John F. Deane was born on Achill Island, off the west coast of Ireland. He is founder of Poetry Ireland, Ireland’s national poetry society, and its journal The Poetry Ireland Review. He has published many collections of poetry, including Snow Falling on Chestnut Hill: New & Selected poems (Carcanet, 2012) and, most recently, Semibreve (Carcanet, 2015) and also a ‘poetry and faith memoir’, Give Dust a Tongue (Columba Press, 2015). A new collection, Dear Pilgrims, appears from Carcanet in 2018. In 2016, Deane was the Teilhard de Chardin Fellow in Catholic Studies in Loyola University, Chicago, and taught a course in poetry.

Arthur Broomfield, poet
Dr Arthur Broomfield is a poet, novelist, publisher and Beckett scholar from County Laois. His previous works include When the Dust Settles (International University Press), The Poetry Reading at Semple Stadium (Lapwing), The Empty Too: Language and philosophy in the works of Samuel Beckett (Cambridge Scholars’ Publishing) and Mice at the Threshing (Lapwing). He is editor of the online poetry journal Outburst and delivers occasional lectures on the works of Samuel Beckett. Cold Coffee at Emo Court is his first full collection.
